Update September 2025
Summary of the changes in Emission Factors for FY2025
This update appears to be out of phase with Climate Active practice which indicate the updates should occur once per year. Given that the last update was in February 2025 the latest changes were not anticipated.
Scope of changes
Changes to the factors look to be wide ranging (about 64% of their dataset has been altered), including emissions related to:- Dollar spend (IELab/FootprintLab)
- Water usage (AusLCI)
- Air travel (UK DESNZ & DEFRA)
- Vehicle usage – mostly related to staff commuting (UK DESNZ & DEFRA)
Estimated Impact
We do not believe there are substantive changes related to scope 1 and 2 emissions as derived from the National Greenhouse Accounts Factors from 2024 other than some scope 3 emissions related to biofuels. Scope 3 for biofuels is difficult to assess as the National Greenhouse Accounts database does not designate any scope 3 emissions and the Climate Active allocation to this parameter does not appear to been adequately explained or referenced.
Outcomes
With such wide-ranging changes, the overall impact on emissions estimates is difficult to assess, although most of the altered factors (~40%) in the update are reductions relative to the previous values, which would suggest (but by no means guarantee) that overall emissions for a FY2025 report should be lower.
Moving forward
Trellis will seek to complete these updates (including quality checking) to the FY2025 factors within the next two weeks.
We will also be updating factors for FY2026 in line with updates from the National Greenhouse Accounts that were also made available earlier this month.
